Some fun character designs I did up for the very cool and super-sweet British Cosplayer/model Tanya Tate.
I'm always a bit apprehensive when sitting down with someone and showing them a comicbook caricature you've drawn for/of them. It's gone over well every time, but there's always that lingering "artist thing" in the back of your mind of "What if they don't like it?".
Well it did go over wonderfully and she did really like seeing herself in this type of comicbook version, and especially got a kick out of the head-shot with her tongue sticking out.
I did this one up to test out some head-shots and get down a comic/toony version of her sort of as a ref/template for future Cosplay-prints, etc. And yes, there's a good amount of Art Adams, Campbell, and some Ryan Stegman(look him up, crazy-talented) mixed into this one, as well as just utilizing the amazing features of Tanya herself. When I first met her I didn't know/recognize who she was. I just saw someone in an Emma Frost costume and thought "oh my gosh, look at those cheek-bones, the hair and her profile. That is a perfect Emma Frost!" So having an aesthetic base-line structure like her's to work with also really lends itself to this type of fun comicbook caricatures without really having to think too hard/much about it.
Once ya have something like this, it's easier to do the paper-doll cut out thing with costumes to see what might work best:i.e. photocopy the page and then draw on the different costumes right over the underlining structure/model. Plus you always want to keep learning and improving, so any fun additional practice like this never goes to waste.
